WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court said Wednesday that Illinois can, for now, keep in place a new law that bars the sale of certain semiautomatic guns and large-capacity magazines.

The high court denied an emergency request from people challenging the law, which banned so-called assault weapons. The law’s opponent had asked the court to put the law on hold while a court challenge continued. The court did not comment and publicly dissented no justice.

Central Florida immigrant community members said they’re living in fear after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed off on a new immigration law this week.

The calls come in. A person breathlessly terrified reports spotting an armed person or persons in a local school, or that they hear shots. Sometimes students, teachers or even the caller have been shot. Sometimes specific room numbers are named. A name and a return phone number might be provided, if the caller doesn’t hang up first.
