On Wednesday 5th April the Court will hand-down judgment in R (on the application of Pearce and others) v Parole Board for England and Wales [2023] UKSC 13. The court will determine two questions: (i) When the Parole Board is deciding whether or not to direct the release of a prisoner on license, can it only take into account accusations if they are proved on the balance of probabilities? Lawyers for former President Trump are urging the judge in his Manhattan criminal case to not allow cameras inside the courtroom on Tuesday, when he is expected to appear before the court for arrangement after being indicted by a New York grand jury last week.

Trump’s team is arguing that the cameras would cause a “circus-like atmosphere at the arrangement, raising unique security concerns, and is inconsistent with President Trump’s presumption of innocence,” in a letter to Judge Juan Merchan on Monday, according to CNBC. Merchan is set to decide today whether cameras will be allowed in the courtroom tomorrow.

Texting while driving is already illegal in Ohio but a new law takes effect this week that will make it easier for officers to pull motorists over for distracted driving.

The new, upgraded law makes driving distracted − texting, checking social media, streaming videos − a primary offense. That means the police no longer need to see another traffic infraction before making the stop.

On Monday, Gov. Mike DeWine said a statewide effort will launch soon to educate Ohio drivers about the new law. DeWine said a new website is up to inform drivers at phonesdown.ohio.gov
